Stem cell treatment for eye disease is a fast-moving research field, and it is easy to confuse hope with evidence. A few procedures, such as limbal stem cell transplantation for the corneal surface, are established. For most retinal and optic nerve conditions, stem cell approaches are still being tested. This guide shows where each major eye condition stands today.
Quick Navigation
The eye is small, accessible and can be examined in fine detail, which makes it attractive for cell-based research. It is also delicate: the retina and optic nerve cannot be replaced, so any procedure needs strict safety standards.
| Condition | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Corneal surface disease from limbal stem cell deficiency | Limbal stem cell transplantation is established in selected cases | Performed by corneal specialists |
| Retinitis pigmentosa and rod-cone dystrophies | Investigational | Cell replacement and protection studies; see retinitis pigmentosa and rod and cone dystrophy |
| Stargardt’s and macular dystrophy | Investigational | RPE cell transplantation and gene therapy trials; see Stargardt’s or macular dystrophy |
| Age-related macular degeneration | Investigational for stem cell approaches | RPE cell studies; see macular degeneration |
| Optic nerve atrophy and LHON | Investigational for stem cell approaches | Neuroprotection research; see optic nerve atrophy and LHON |
| Glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy | Standard care is established; stem cell use is investigational | See glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy |
Responsible studies are registered, approved by an ethics committee, explain risks in writing and measure results with standard tests such as visual acuity, visual fields and OCT. Participation is voluntary, and in many studies the treatment is provided as part of research. Ask any provider to show registration and approval before anything is done to your eye.
The National Guidelines for Stem Cell Research, 2017 issued by ICMR and the Department of Biotechnology state that any use of stem cells in patients, other than hematopoietic stem cell reconstitution for approved indications, is investigational. In September 2026 the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare also issued an advisory on regulation of stem cell therapy reiterating that routine clinical use is limited to officially approved indications.
Rules are updated from time to time, so confirm the current position with the official sources listed at the end of this article.
Procedures involving the eye or optic nerve can cause infection, bleeding, raised eye pressure, retinal detachment and, in the worst cases, permanent loss of remaining vision. Serious harm has been reported after unregulated stem cell injections into the eye. Only agree to a procedure that is part of an approved protocol, performed by a qualified eye surgeon, with ethics committee approval and written informed consent. Always keep your own eye specialist informed, and do not stop current treatment on your own.
Costs in India are generally lower than in the USA, UK or Europe, but there is no single price. They depend on the condition, the protocol and cell source, the tests required, the number of sessions, hospital stay, and accommodation and travel. Ask for a written, itemised estimate stating what is included, and avoid large advance payments without documents.
Not currently, apart from established procedures such as corneal limbal stem cell transplantation for suitable cases.
Retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, Stargardt disease and some optic nerve conditions.
No. Glaucoma is treated with pressure-lowering care; stem cell use is investigational.
Safety depends on approval, expertise and protocol. Unregulated eye injections have caused serious vision loss.

Stem cell research in the eye is promising, but only a few uses are established. Know which category your condition falls into, ask for documents and keep your own eye specialist involved.
