In Canada, cell-based products are regulated like drugs. That gives patients a useful way to tell a genuine study from a sales pitch.

Cell products that are meant to treat disease generally need review by Health Canada before they are sold or used in a study. A legitimate trial therefore has an approval trail, an ethics board and a published protocol. A programme that offers cells directly to the public without any of these should raise concern.
Stargardt’s disease, usually caused by changes in the ABCA4 gene, has attracted several early-phase studies of replacement retinal cells. Their main purpose so far has been to check safety.
Public registries list studies by condition, location, phase and recruiting status. Search using both “Stargardt” and “macular dystrophy”, and read the eligibility section carefully, since many studies require a confirmed gene result and a certain level of measurable vision.
Your own ophthalmologist can usually tell you whether a listed study fits you, and can supply the records a study team will ask for.
An early-phase study can show that a procedure is tolerable. It cannot show that sight improves. Until larger, controlled studies report, cell therapy is a research option rather than a treatment you can expect to receive.
A clinical genetics referral explains the result to the whole family.

Tinted lenses help with snow and glare.
