Hypoplasia means the optic nerve formed smaller than usual. Early eye, hormone and development checks give a child the best start.

Parents may notice wandering or shaky eye movements, a child who does not follow faces or light well, or eyes that turn in or out. A specialist sees a small optic disc, often with a pale ring around it.
Vision in ONH varies from near-normal to severe loss, and the two eyes can differ.
ONH can be linked with brain development and hormone differences, including involvement of the pituitary gland. Paediatric teams therefore often arrange MRI and blood tests for growth, thyroid and cortisol function, because a missed hormone problem can be dangerous in illness.
The eye specialist, paediatrician and endocrinologist usually work together.
If one eye is weaker, patching or other amblyopia therapy may be advised for the better-developed visual pathway. Glasses correct focus errors that add to blur. Early intervention programmes support movement, speech and learning.
