Optic nerve hypoplasia in Nigeria: a guide for parents and families
Learning that your baby or child has optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH) can be frightening, especially when answers are hard to find locally. This page explains what ONH is, why a child’s hormones also need checking, and which forms of support make the biggest difference to development.
What ONH means
ONH means the optic nerve did not fully develop before birth, so fewer nerve fibres connect the eye to the brain. One eye or both may be involved. Vision can range from nearly normal to severely reduced. In most children it does not worsen with time, and the cause is usually unknown.
Signs parents may notice
- Wandering eye movementsRhythmic, shaky movements called nystagmus.

Why the whole child must be assessed
ONH can occur with septo-optic dysplasia, where the pituitary gland and brain midline structures are also affected. Low cortisol, thyroid or growth hormone can cause drops in blood sugar, poor growth and tiredness. An early paediatric endocrine review is therefore important, and it may protect health more than the eye test itself.

Where stem cell therapy fits
In ONH the nerve fibres never formed in the first place, which makes the scientific challenge different from diseases where fibres are lost later. No stem cell therapy has been proven to help children with ONH.
