ARMD treatment in UAE: know whether yours is dry or wet, then check weekly at home
Two forms of ARMD behave very differently. One changes slowly; the other can steal central sight within weeks.
Dry and wet forms
Dry ARMD, the common form, involves yellow deposits called drusen and slow thinning of the macula. Wet ARMD happens when fragile new vessels leak under the retina. It is less frequent but more urgent.
Many people begin dry and later turn wet, so a dry diagnosis does not mean checks can stop.
A weekly home test
An Amsler grid is a printed square of straight lines. Look at it with one eye covered, wearing your reading glasses, in good light. New bending, gaps or dark patches should prompt a call to your eye doctor within a day or two.
Do this at the same time each week so changes are easy to notice.
Long-term residents and retirees
Many older residents split their time between the UAE and another country. Ask for copies of your OCT scans before you travel so any doctor you see can compare them, and keep your injection dates written down.
