Stargardt disease and other macular dystrophies often start in the teens or twenties, and central vision matters enormously for study, work and driving. This page explains what stem cell trials have tested so far, and how to approach the idea without false hope.

The macula depends on a layer of support cells called the retinal pigment epithelium. In Stargardt disease these cells become overloaded with waste material and fail, and the photoreceptors above them follow. That is why replacement of support cells has become a research target.
Early-phase trials have placed lab-grown support cells beneath the retina to test safety and effect on vision.
Some participants showed small or temporary changes in vision, while many showed none. Researchers are still working out which patients may benefit.
No stem cell treatment is approved for macular dystrophy, and long-term benefit is unproven.

Stargardt disease mainly affects central vision, so side vision usually stays, which helps with mobility.
Trials are the proper route for unproven therapies. We can discuss how they differ from private treatment and what to ask.
