Why diabetic retinopathy is often found late

The early stages cause no pain and very little change in vision. By the time blurring appears, the small vessels of the retina may already be badly damaged. Eye screening is not available in every clinic, and many people with diabetes have never had a dilated eye exam.

If you have diabetes, ask for a retinal check at least once a year, even if your sight seems fine.

Blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol control

The most important protection for the retina, and it costs far less than late-stage treatment.

Laser treatment

Seals leaking vessels and reduces the risk of severe loss. Often more widely available than injections.

Anti-VEGF injections

Used for macular swelling and advanced disease, where available and affordable.

Vitrectomy

Surgery for bleeding or scarring inside the eye, usually in larger centres.

Where stem cell therapy is being studied

Researchers are studying whether stem cell products could protect the retinal vessels and surrounding tissue damaged by diabetes. This work is early. Stem cell therapy for this condition is still experimental. It is not an approved standard treatment, and results differ from person to person. We cannot promise any particular outcome. It does not replace laser, injections or good diabetes control.

Fasting and travel

If you fast, for example during Ramadan, discuss medicine timing with your diabetes doctor before you travel.

Carry enough medicine, your prescriptions and a doctor's letter.

Time zones and flights
