Hypoplasia is not an injury to a healthy nerve. The nerve never grew fully, and that changes what any cell-based approach could realistically achieve.

In most research on optic nerve disease, scientists study a nerve that was normal and then damaged. In ONH, fewer nerve fibres formed in the womb, and the brain’s visual pathways developed around that smaller input.
Even if new fibres could be added, the brain would have to learn to use them, and timing in childhood matters.
There is no published proof that stem cells can enlarge or restore a hypoplastic optic nerve in children. Laboratory studies on nerve protection and regeneration exist, but they are mostly in adult injury or glaucoma models.
Parents should treat any programme that offers a child an eye or spinal injection for ONH with great caution.
Glasses, treatment of amblyopia, early developmental therapy and careful hormone follow-up all have solid evidence. They help a child make the most of the vision they have.

The nerve developed with fewer fibres, so there is less to repair.
