Stem cell therapy for retinitis pigmentosa in Dubai: what to ask before you decide

Why many families in the UAE look into it
RP is inherited, and in the Gulf region marriages between relatives are more common than in many other parts of the world, which raises the chance of recessive eye conditions appearing in several family members. Seeing a parent, brother or cousin lose sight makes families search for every possible option, including newer ones.
What the research shows so far
Early-phase studies
Small human studies have tested cells placed in or near the eye. They mainly looked at safety, and some reported modest changes in light sensitivity in a few patients.
Cell types under study
Researchers have worked with bone marrow–derived cells, retinal pigment epithelium cells and progenitor cells. Each behaves differently and none is an established treatment.
What has not been shown
There is no proof that stem cells can restore lost photoreceptors, reverse tunnel vision or stop RP. Results differ between patients, and many show no measurable change.
