    What happens inside the eye

    Most Stargardt disease is linked to changes in the ABCA4 gene. A fatty waste material called lipofuscin builds up under the macula and the cells there gradually stop working, while side vision is typically kept for much longer.

    Experimental stem cell work in this area has focused on replacing or supporting the RPE cells under the macula. Stem cell therapy is still an experimental treatment. It is not approved by Health Canada or the US FDA for these conditions, and results differ from person to person. We cannot promise any particular outcome.
