Glaucoma in Nigeria: protecting sight, and where stem cell research fits
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of permanent blindness in Nigeria. It tends to be more common, and to progress faster, in people of African descent. Because it usually causes no pain, many people only learn they have it after side vision is already gone. This page focuses on what protects the optic nerve.
What happens in glaucoma
The optic nerve carries images from the eye to the brain. In glaucoma, usually because eye pressure is too high for that particular nerve, the fibres are lost gradually. Vision fades from the edges inward, and lost nerve fibres do not grow back.
Main types
- Open-angle glaucomaSlow, painless and the most common form in Nigeria.
- Angle-closure glaucomaFluid drainage is blocked. It can be sudden, with pain, redness, haloes and vomiting, and is an emergency.
- Normal-pressure glaucomaNerve damage occurs even with pressure in the normal range.
How it is detected
- Eye pressure checkA quick test, though a single normal reading does not rule glaucoma out.
- Optic nerve examination and OCTShow thinning of the nerve fibre layer.
- Visual field testMaps the areas of vision already lost.
- Gonioscopy and corneal thicknessAssess the drainage angle and help interpret the pressure reading.
Treatments with genuine evidence
Pressure-lowering drops
Daily drops remain the usual first step. Their benefit depends on using them every day, so build the routine into mealtimes or a phone alarm.
Laser treatment
Laser trabeculoplasty is a recognised first-line or add-on option for open-angle glaucoma, and laser iridotomy is used for narrow angles.
Surgery
When drops and laser are not enough, drainage surgery or tube implants create a new route for fluid to leave the eye.
What stem cell research is trying to do
Lowering eye pressure is still the only proven way to slow glaucoma. Stem cell approaches are being explored to support retinal ganglion cells, the nerve cells that glaucoma harms. This work is experimental, there is no approved stem cell treatment for glaucoma, and it should never replace your drops, laser or surgery.

Screen your relatives
Brothers, sisters, parents and adult children of a glaucoma patient carry a higher risk and should be examined.
Do not skip drops when money is tight
Speak to your eye doctor about cheaper combinations or schedules rather than stopping.
Keep follow-up visits
Field tests every few months show whether treatment is working.
Avoid unregulated eye remedies
Some traditional preparations can damage the eye or delay proper care.

Can vision lost to glaucoma be restored?
No. Treatment aims to prevent further loss. Lost nerve fibres cannot yet be replaced by any proven therapy.
Can I stop my eye drops if I have stem cell therapy?
No. Pressure control is essential, and any experimental therapy would be an addition, never a replacement.
How often should I be checked?
Most patients are reviewed every three to six months, but your doctor will set the interval based on how stable your readings and field tests are.
