Stem cell treatment for retinitis pigmentosa treatment | Eye Stem Cell Center

Stem cell for retinitis pigmentosa in Nigeria: honest answers for patients and families

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) often begins quietly, with a teenager who stumbles in a dim room or an adult who keeps bumping into things at dusk. If this sounds familiar, this page explains what RP is, what can be done today, and where stem cell therapy stands, so you can decide with clear information.

    family consultation / retina examination

What retinitis pigmentosa does to the eye

RP is an inherited retinal dystrophy. The retina’s photoreceptors slowly stop working, rods first and cones later. Side vision narrows over the years, and in many people the central field is eventually affected too. The pace is very different from one person to another, even inside one family.

Signs that should prompt a retina check

    • Night blindnessTrouble seeing after sunset, in cinemas or in poorly lit rooms.
    • Tunnel visionMissing objects at the edges, tripping over kerbs or misjudging doorways.
    • Slow light adjustmentTaking a long time to see when moving from bright sun into a dark space.
    • Family patternA parent, sibling or cousin with similar symptoms or early blindness.

Getting a firm diagnosis from Nigeria

A dilated retinal examination, visual field test and OCT scan are available in many eye centres. The electroretinogram (ERG) confirms RP most clearly, but it is offered at only a few facilities, so a recent ERG report is valuable. Genetic testing, which identifies the responsible gene, usually requires a sample sent to an overseas laboratory.

    Care with proven value

    Cataract surgery

RP patients get cataracts early, and removing them can bring back useful clarity.

    Macular swelling treatment

Fluid at the centre of the retina can sometimes be reduced with drops or tablets.

    Gene therapy (RPE65 only)

Approved for one rare genetic subtype, and not available in most countries, including Nigeria.

    Genetic counselling

Explains the chance of passing RP to children and helps relatives plan.

    Where stem cell therapy fits

Stem cell therapy for RP is investigational. The idea is to support photoreceptors and the supporting cells that are still alive, and possibly slow further loss. It is not an approved treatment, it is not a cure, and results differ from patient to patient. Our team reviews your reports first and tells you plainly if the therapy is unlikely to help. Never stop vitamin A or other prescribed medicines without your retina specialist’s advice.

Everyday support that makes a difference

    Lighting at home

Bright, even light and night-lights in corridors reduce falls.

    Glare control

Tinted or wraparound lenses can ease discomfort outdoors.

    Mobility skills

A white cane or orientation training builds confidence as side vision narrows.

    Phone accessibility

Large text, high contrast and voice features help with reading and messaging.

    Frequently asked questions

Can stem cell therapy cure retinitis pigmentosa?

No. There is no cure for RP in general, and stem cell therapy is experimental. At best it aims to support remaining retinal cells, and outcomes cannot be promised.

Do I need genetic testing before an assessment?

It is helpful but not compulsory. Genetic results can clarify the subtype and inheritance, and we can still review your other reports without it.

    Can a teenager be assessed?

Yes. Parents can send the young person’s reports, and the decision to treat is taken carefully, with the family fully informed.
