Macular degeneration in Nigeria: spotting it early and choosing care that works

When reading becomes hard, faces look blurred or straight lines seem to bend, many older adults assume it is just age or a cataract. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common reason, and it is often found late. This page explains how to recognise it and what truly helps.

    How AMD affects sight

The macula is the small central area of the retina used for reading, recognising faces and driving. AMD damages it, so central vision blurs while side vision is usually preserved. That is why AMD rarely causes total blindness, but it can take away independence.

    Dry and wet AMD

    • Dry AMDThe more common form. Changes build slowly over years as the macula thins.
    • Wet AMDAbnormal blood vessels leak under the retina. Vision can drop within days or weeks and needs urgent treatment.

    Warning signs

    • DistortionStraight lines such as door frames or tiles look wavy.
    • Dark or blank patchA smudge in the middle of what you are looking at.
    • Reading difficultyLetters merge or disappear even with new glasses.
    • Fading coloursColours seem duller than before.

A simple home check with an Amsler grid, one eye at a time, can pick up early change.

    Tests used for diagnosis

A dilated retinal exam, OCT scan of the macula and, when wet AMD is suspected, fluorescein angiography. OCT also lets your doctor track fluid and thickness over time.

    Treatments with genuine evidence

    Anti-VEGF injections

These injections into the eye are the standard treatment for wet AMD. Starting early gives the best chance of protecting vision, and they are usually repeated at intervals.

    AREDS2-type supplements

For intermediate dry AMD, a specific vitamin and mineral formula has been shown to lower the risk of progression. It does not help everyone, so ask your doctor before starting.

    Risk-factor control

Stopping smoking is the single most useful step. Managing blood pressure and cholesterol, and eating leafy greens and oily fish, also support macular health.

    Where stem cell research fits

Researchers are testing replacement of damaged retinal pigment epithelium cells in dry AMD, but these approaches remain experimental and are not approved. If you have wet AMD, please do not delay or stop injections to try anything else. We discuss stem cell therapy only after reviewing your scans, and only as an optional, investigational step.

Living well with reduced central vision

Magnifiers, bright task lighting, large-print books and phone accessibility settings help many people keep reading. A low-vision assessment can match tools to your needs.

    Sending your reports from Nigeria

Share your OCT images and any injection history through the Upload Report page or WhatsApp. We will tell you what the scans suggest and whether further assessment would add value.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is macular degeneration curable?

There is no cure. Wet AMD can often be controlled with injections, and dry AMD can sometimes be slowed with lifestyle measures and supplements.

    Will I go completely blind?

AMD affects central vision but normally leaves side vision intact, so most people keep enough sight to move around.

Should I stop my injections to try stem cell therapy?

No. Injections for wet AMD protect vision and should continue unless your retina specialist advises otherwise.
