Optic atrophy is a loss of fibres in the nerve that connects the eye to the brain. Patients in Cairo, Alexandria, Assiut and elsewhere in Egypt often come to us after seeing a neurologist and an eye doctor, and still ask, "What caused this, and can anything be done?" This page explains how our doctors approach those questions.

If pressure, blood pressure or sugar are involved, controlling them can protect the remaining nerve. If inflammation is active, a specialist may start treatment quickly. If the damage is old and stable, the focus moves to rehabilitation.
Please share your MRI films and reports, OCT scans of the nerve fibre layer, visual field printouts, VEP results and recent blood tests. Where possible, include past records that show how your vision has changed.
Strong contrast, good lighting, large print and screen-reading features help work and study. A vision rehabilitation specialist can teach scanning methods that make reading and walking easier.
This therapy is still experimental for nerve damage and is not approved as a treatment. We consider it only after the cause is addressed, and we cannot promise improvement.

No — it isn’t a standard first-line pathway anywhere. Patients researching this are usually exploring options beyond conventional monitoring, which is why many look at centers abroad.
It can be, but expectations should be more measured the longer damage has been present. We’ll be upfront about this after reviewing your reports.
That needs to be addressed first, in coordination with your treating specialist, before anything else is considered.
