Genetic testing for inherited retinal conditions is available through provincial genetics services in Canada, but results can take months and do not always give a clear answer. A number of patients contacting us have been told their result is "inconclusive" or shows a "variant of uncertain significance" — which can feel like being left without a diagnosis at all.
What to keep in mind: rod-cone dystrophy covers several genetic subtypes with different speeds of progression. Stem cell therapy for these conditions is experimental and not an approved routine treatment in Canada. Our review looks at your current imaging and function first; a confirmed gene helps but is not required.
What We Ask You to Send First
- OCT scan showing photoreceptor status
- ERG results, which separate rod from cone involvement
- Genetic report, even if the finding is inconclusive
- Visual field test
If Your Genetic Result Is Inconclusive
Send it anyway. An uncertain variant can still be useful context, and it does not stop us from assessing your imaging and ERG. Genetic services may also reclassify a variant later, and we can revisit your file if that happens.
