Long-standing diabetes can damage the tiny blood vessels that nourish the retina. In Taiz, Hodeidah and elsewhere in Yemen, steady access to diabetes medicines, glucose monitoring and eye screening is not always possible, so retinopathy is often discovered late. Stem cell therapy is being studied for damaged retinal tissue, but it is not a substitute for treatment that is already proven.

Laser treatment, anti-VEGF injections, vitrectomy surgery and tight control of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol remain the foundation of care. If you need one of these, we will say so plainly, even if it means stem cell therapy is not your priority.
Researchers are exploring whether stem cell–based approaches can support damaged retinal cells and blood vessels, mainly in later stages where vision has already dropped. The evidence is early, results vary, and this therapy is not an approved treatment for diabetic retinopathy.
